Stockbridge made it three wins from three with a comfortable 4-0 win over rock bottom Fleet Spurs to move up to fifth in the Hampshire Premier League.

On a freezing cold afternoon at the Recreation Ground where temperatures hovered just below freezing, it was Fleet Spurs who had the first opportunity, with a shot from 25 yards that went just wide of the upright.

The possession in the first ten minutes was heavily in favour of the Robins with the visitors sat very deep.

At times Stockbridge were guilty of overplaying and their first direct play of the game brought the opener. From Wilson’s long goal kick Lewis Newbury won a flick on which found Liam Hammond, he played a precise ball through to ‘that man’ Chris Pye, whose controlled finish found the bottom corner on nine minutes. Water is wet and of course, Chris Pye scores goals.

‘Spurs looked every bit a side propping up the table and Stockbridge put the visitors under a barrage of pressure, moving the ball about nicely from side to side.

A Hammond free kick from the left forced a routine save from the Fleet keeper in the 18th minute, his parry dropped in the box but was hacked clear by the Fleet right back.

Eventually the ball was worked back out to Sam Payne in the same phase of play, he played a beautiful first time cross onto the head of Lewis Newbury who was left with a simple header to bag his first home goal for the Robins in 78 appearances, across two spells.

The visitors had their first attempt on goal on the half hour mark with a curling shot that was straight at Wilson, who held on comfortably.

In-form Liam Hammond then made it 3-0 just before the break. His free kick from 25 yards out went in via a combination of keeper and post, giving the Robins a commanding lead.

HT: 3-0

The second period was even colder than the first, with a freezing mist reducing visibility further and dampening some of the more expansive play we saw in the first 45”.

Fleet nearly reduced arrears on 55 minutes when their towering number nine got a shot off in the box after a long throw was not dealt with, his deflected effort was kept out of the bottom corner by Kieran Wilson with Neil Abrahams there to clear the danger.

The Spurs were made to pay for their missed opportunity and Stockbridge put the game to bed just before the hour mark. Substitute Lewis-Price-Lloyd did well to carry the ball into the box, only to be cynically fouled by the Fleet number three.

Chris Pye stepped up to dispatch the resulting spot kick and put the game beyond any doubt with his 12th goal of the campaign.

For the remaining 30 minutes it was a professional display from Robins, who kept the ball neatly to see the game out. Pye could have completed his hat trick ten minutes from time but was denied by a brilliant save from the Fleet Spurs number one.

In the end a comfortable victory for Stockbridge which has signed off a great week for the club, moving them up to fifth in the league with games in hand on two of sides above them.
